When you look at the simplest measure, Democrats won among all religious groups, except Protestants, among whom they got 44 percent. However, when you take out non-white voters (don't know what kind of racial definitions they used) Democrats only got 37 percent of Protestants.

Fully 34 percent of the electorate described themselves as "born-again." Among these, white evangelicals only gave Democrats 28 percent of their vote, while when non-white evangelicals are included, Dems got 41 percent. Obviously, a lot of those evangelicals are not white and, for those who are not, a Democratic vote is a strong possibility.

As for the progressive, green (white) evangelicals -- I suspect there is a huge piece of re-education that some leaders will have to carry out before that will be an identifiable evangelical voting block. But I have no data on that point.janinsanfranhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07548452260456734928noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11093162.post-1163131557975365862006-11-09T20:05:00.000-08:002006-11-09T20:05:00.000-08:00It will be interesting to see if your prediction b...It will be interesting to see if your prediction bears out and Republicans become a regional party, or if they part ways with their fundamentalist bedfellows (which more than a few party leaders disdain) and try to regain a centrist, libertarian persona.

And how did the evangelical vote split this election?
