A small boost for civilization in a generally depressing landscape


We can't abolish death (as Ash Wednesday reminds us) -- but the state does not have to take it upon itself to inflict it.

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has signed a bill abolishing the death penalty. Sixteen states now abstain from judicial killing, a sensible stance in the light of the inevitable imperfections of human institutions.
