The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force has a nice little campaign to encourage the government to count all of us. If LGBT people aren't visible in official statistics, we're not really there when it comes to government protections and services. Yet the Census still fails to ask.
Seems a good idea to me.[NGLT is] campaigning to change the Census in future years to make sure it includes questions that identify LGBT people. And it's more than just the Census -- we need all the yearly surveys the government conducts to do this as well. We need to be counted. When we go to bat for things like LGBT health services or hate crime prevention, we can use this data to prove our point. We'll be able to say, "Look, there are people who need this in your district."
