There's a corollary. When the people who are protesting show they are willing to suffer for what they are seeking, for just a moment the rest of society will listen up. That's how genuinely nonviolent movements break through the media filter. Most people take to protest only when they believe it is their best hope for getting what they want. It doesn’t have to be extremely promising, just more likely to work than anything else.
For an instant, most involuntarily, Occupy Wall Street got that because cops acted badly, with mace and mass arrests. Our opponents won't always be so stupid -- probably. But succesful movements gain intelligence on the fly too.
