Sometimes good things happen. I've written previously
about the folly and shame of chipping away at California's tax shortfall
by closing state parks.
In December, the
Mono Lake Tufa State Nature Reserve received a reprieve. Mono Lake is a vast volcanic basin east of the Sierras whose alkaline waters "grow" the strange calcium-carbonate castles named "tufas."
Seeing them makes you wonder if you've landed on the moon. Good for California and the lake's local champions for stopping the drive to close the park and let this unique environment decay.
