There's a sort of silly trope -- which I am sure I've indulged in myself sometime -- which consists of saying that climate change means "WE HAVE TO SAVE THE PLANET."
Nonsense. The planet will be fine as it heats up. Mitigating the consequences of carbon pollution is about preserving many, many contemporary species on the planet, most pertinently from our vantage point, the human one.
I thought about this when I glanced through Michael Brendan Dougherty's oped in the Times berating Pope Francis for "zeal to crush the Latin Mass."
The piece reads as if he thinks alterations to Catholic religious ritual, or any religious ritual, can kill off God. Somehow I think that if there is a God, She's impervious to such human follies -- just like the planet. Though perhaps more kindly inclined toward her creatures than the planet can be.
But what do I know?
