Friday cat blogging

Here I sit, convalescing from my violent encounter with an asphalt road, and Mio keeps up sentry duty. This human better not try disappearing for two weeks again!

He's not the only watcher. It sure is nice to be out of rehab and continuing recovery at home!

Friday cat blogging

The boy is substantial. When people first meet Mio, they are often surprised by his heft. He carries it well, all 18 pounds of him. When he wants to, he can sprint and even jump surprisingly high, chasing after Janeway in a flurry of fur.

She's even faster. When not enticing Mio from a sultry posture, Janeway also dashes about, often leaping onto furniture to menace her big playmate.

We stay out of the way when they get the zoomies.

Friday cat blogging -- sleepy time

Unlike most of the country, summer in San Francisco is cool and gray. Our cats, after being fed and loved by their human servants, take the mist to signal they should take naps.

What a life!

Friday cat blogging

Whatever is going on out there, Janeway seems to yearn to be part of it.

Mio is such a big boy, he not only hangs off his bed. He even hangs off the furniture.

Friday cat blogging

I don't know whether Mr. Mio has any idea how silly his twenty pound body looks when he rolls over and plays charming like this. Obviously he's confident in his safety and I'm glad of that. For a monster cat, he came to us a little timid.

Meanwhile, Ms. Janeway explores any available box. She had never been timid about exploring.

You might say Mio is putting his best face forward. You'd be right. Actually, he's a softy, but in this slightly wary posture, it is hard to tell.

Janeway, on the other hand, looks sweet and loving -- until she decides to explore her surroundings with teeth and occasional claws. I have the scars to prove it.

She wants to know what's in there. She approached cautiously, then braved the narrow tunnel. What if there were something in there to eat or harry to its death? (That's what she does to the unlucky stray fly.)

But no -- nothing in there. It took her a moment to figure out how to back out. She looked a little disconcerted.

Friday cat blogging

Janeway becomes possessive if one of us packs a bag for an overnight. She seems to ask: can I go too? No, you can't.
Big Mio tries to assert he's top cat. And he's certainly a big guy. But I'd bet on Janeway to take the lead every time.

A lot of feline mischief goes on in this household.

Friday cat blogging

They seem to think somebody turned up the heat here in San Francisco. I think so too.

Friday cat blogging

Actually this should probably be titled something like "domesticity at a quiet moment."  The beasts are often not so settled. Erudite Partner can even read without interruption, not always the case.

We live with overseers. Yes, Mio is a big boy.

Friday cat blogging -- signs of the season

Janeway knows what is important to the humans in this household and even looks on ...

We haven't always turned on the furnace this fall, but we have got out a quilt.
Mio knows what that perch is for: day sleeping. For night sleeping, he prefers to get between us.

Friday cat blogging

Such a picture of peace and contemplation. This doesn't capture the mad ruckus the two cats sometimes create in the middle of the night. But Mio and Janeway make lovely sentries for Erudite Partner in quiet moments.

You may be asking: "don't you feed that cat?" Of course we do. But regular supplies of cat food and cat treats don't discourage her from chasing her favorite flavor: plastic! My watch band is often at risk of those teeth also. Here, the EP is trying to gently recapture the remote.

Friday cat blogging

It's hard being confined indoors when you're optimized for hunting any small critter that moves. Several times a day, Janeway and Mio hear or spy some animal outside their windows and go into full alert mode.

Sitting around behind them, we usually can't see what all the fuss is about. But they have senses and instincts we lack.

It's a cooperative practice for these two.

Who's that cat in the window? Janeway doesn't care. She has caught the evening sunbeam and stretches happily.

Here's the view from outside, Janeway looking far more alert.

I am watched. I think it's about the opening of cans. Why don't I get on with it? It's dinner time and we're starving. ...

Friday cat blogging

Janeway and Mio bask in a sunbeam, calmly watching the world go by. You would not know, they could have been roughhousing the minute before. Or demanding of us to be fed. All is peaceful here.

Friday cat blogging

Two cats, one bed. Despite the size discrepancy, Janeway holds her own when Mio approaches. They work it out, often by both abandoning the choice window spot.

Friday cat blogging

When I came in dripping from moving the garbage cans off the street in the drizzle, they were standing by to superintend me. Thanks for the support!
Meanwhile, in heavily populated Golden Gate Park, a different sort of critter ambled along the margin of Blue Heron Lake, without regard for human observers.
