Change of seasons comes abruptly on Martha's Vineyard. In late August, the Prez leaves, a week later families take their children home for the school year, and after Labor Day, nearly all the summer crowd departs. The docks at the little fishing port of Menemsha are suddenly nearly empty.
A few private yachts still pass through; cooked lobster is still available from the two dockside fish markets.
But after the summer crowding, what feels notable is silent emptiness.
No one would think to attempt a quiet paddle inside the harbor in August; too much boat traffic then.
The jetty makes for a lovely walk at sunset.
