VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican heatedly defended Pope Benedict XVI on Tuesday, claiming accusations that he helped cover up the actions of pedophile priests are part of an anti-Catholic "hate" campaign targeting the pope for his opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage.

Vatican Radio broadcast comments by two senior cardinals explaining "the motive for these attacks" on the pope and the Vatican newspaper chipped in with spirited comments from another top cardinal.

Let's ber truthful here: the true, disgusting, story of the Roman church's persistent coddling of child sexual abusers is amplified because it fits a narrative of old men beating up on women and gays to preserve their own authority. These guys think they have the moral standing to tell people who are living something they cannot know, pregnancy, what they can morally do in circumstances they can never experience. And they claim to propagate a religion of love but would deny civil equality to people who are not part of their community who love each other.

Serial promoters of patriarchal privilege don't get the benefit of the doubt when the moat in their own eye is revealed. That may not be entirely fair, but isn't there something about people who live in glass houses not throwing stones ...
