Political convention watching

A bit of public art from Bernie's home town of Burlington, VT.
It is all up to democracy. If most of the people want to be lied to so that they can be angry, then goodbye the good old U.S.A.
I don't know about the "good old USA," but I've long believed that democracy was better than any yet imagined alternative. Looks like we're running a serious test of that premise.

oh dear, this is the first time we are on opposite sides, as opposed to agreeing to disagree. your surprisingly-for-such-a-fine-writer stale comment that democracy is the best of many flawed systems MIGHT have held some water 50 years ago, jan, but voting is a FARCE, especally in national elections in the USA now. And it is dangerous to pretend to the people that they have power there any longer (for those who ever had it in the first place)

Hi Susan: where we differ is that I believe power -- physical, moral, whatever sort -- can only be institutionalized and thus made effective through some broad consent process. People have to be on board and feel some buy-in or you have nothing sustainable, just people cowed or bowed and mostly keeping their heads down. So I think democracy itself is worth fighting for -- because agitation and even revolution without democracy means you got nothing.
